Questions to ask a wedding photographer before you book

Picking a wedding photographer is one of the few wedding decisions you can’t redo. The cake can be swapped and the playlist can change the week of, but the photos are what you keep. I’ve photographed and filmed more than 50 weddings across 28 states, and the couples who end up happiest are the ones who asked good questions up front. Here are the ones I’d ask any photographer, including me.

Questions about availability and fit

1. Are you available on our date, and will you personally be there?

Some studios book several weddings on the same day and send associate shooters. That can be fine, but you should know who is actually showing up. Ask for that person’s name and their work.

2. Can we see a few full wedding galleries?

Instagram shows the best 1% of a day. A full gallery shows how someone handles a dark reception hall, a rushed family photo list and a ceremony in harsh noon sun. I keep full wedding galleries on my site for exactly this reason.

3. Have you shot weddings like ours?

A 40-guest courthouse ceremony and a 400-guest Congolese wedding with a traditional ceremony and a grand entrance need very different planning. Ask what they’d do differently for your style of wedding, and listen for specifics.

Questions about coverage

4. How many hours do we actually need?

Walk through your day out loud: getting ready, first look or not, ceremony, family photos, cocktail hour, entrances, dances, cake, send-off. A good photographer will help you match hours to the moments you care about instead of just quoting the biggest package. My Silver collection starts at 6 hours, and Gold and Platinum cover the full day. You can compare them on my packages page.

5. Do we need a second photographer?

For bigger guest counts, two getting-ready locations, or a day where the couple and families are in different places, a second photographer means you get both sides of the story. It also means one person can grab candids while the other runs the family list. A second photographer is part of my Gold collection.

6. Do you also offer video, and do your photo and film teams work together?

If you want both, ask whether they come from one team. When photo and film are planned together, you avoid two crews fighting for the same angle during your vows. I offer both through Clone’s Universe, so the timeline is built once.

Questions about the day itself

7. What’s your plan if it rains or runs late?

Indiana weather changes fast. Ask where they’d take portraits indoors near your venue, and how they handle a timeline that slips by 45 minutes. You want someone who has a plan B before you need one.

8. What backup gear do you bring?

Ask whether they carry backup camera bodies, shoot to two memory cards at once, and back up files the same night. These questions sound technical, but they’re really about whether your photos survive a bad day for the equipment.

9. How do you handle family photos?

Family formals go smoothly when there’s a written list and someone who knows the family calling names. Ask if they’ll help you build the list ahead of time. For big families, this one question can save you 30 minutes on the day.

Questions about delivery and rights

10. What exactly do we receive, and how?

Ask about the number of edited images to expect, whether you get full-resolution files, and how they’re delivered. My collections include full-resolution images in a private online gallery, and Platinum adds same-day image delivery so you can share a few photos while the night is still going.

11. Do we get a print release?

A print release lets you print your photos wherever you like. Without one, some labs won’t print professional images. Every one of my photo collections includes a print release.

12. How long until we get our photos and film?

Get a clear timeframe in writing. For film, ask when you’ll see a teaser versus the full edit. My Elite film collection, for example, includes a next-day trailer and the full film in under 12 days.

Questions about the contract

13. What does it take to hold our date?

With me it’s simple: a consultation call, a signed agreement, and a retainer to reserve your date. Read the contract for what happens if the date moves, if someone gets sick, and what’s refundable. A clear contract protects both of you.

14. Is travel included?

If you’re getting married outside the city, ask how travel is quoted. I’m based in Indianapolis and cover all of Indiana plus Chicago, Ohio, Louisville and destination weddings. Travel outside Indianapolis is quoted separately, so there are no surprises.

One last tip

Pay attention to how you feel on the call. You’ll spend more time with your photographer on your wedding day than with almost anyone else. If they listen, ask about your families and your plans, and make you laugh a little, that comfort shows up in the photos.
