Eagle Creek Park engagement and family photos: a local guide

Eagle Creek Park is one of my favorite places for engagement and family photos, and it’s close to home. My studio is on Pike Plaza Road on the northwest side, in the same corner of Indianapolis. It’s a huge park, and in one session you can get wooded trails, open fields and big views of the reservoir. Here’s how I plan a session there.
A quick note: park rules and fees change. I checked Eagle Creek Park’s and Indy Parks’ published guidance this fall, but always confirm before your session. When you book with me, I handle the permit.
Why Eagle Creek works so well for photos
- Variety in one place. Shaded woods, open meadows and water give us three different looks without driving across town.
- Room to breathe. It’s a big park, so it’s easier to find a quiet spot than downtown, which helps if you feel awkward posing in public.
- Great for kids. Families can walk, run and play between shots, which gives me real moments instead of stiff poses.
- Seasonal color. Fall leaves, spring green and even a snowy winter session all look good here.
Getting in: entrances, hours and fees
The park is open dawn to dusk, every day. There are two main entrances: the south gate on 56th Street, just west of I-465, and the north gate at 71st Street near I-65. The south entrance is the one closest to my studio.
There’s a daily entry fee per vehicle. The park currently lists $6 for resident vehicles and $8 for non-residents, payable at the gate by cash or card. If you’re coming in more than one car, each vehicle pays, so carpooling saves a little.

The photo permit
This is the part most people don’t know about. Eagle Creek Park says photos you take yourself for personal use are fine, but professional photo sessions need a permit paid in advance through the Park Office. The published rate is $30 per day for a professional photo shoot, with an agreement to sign. Indy Parks also notes that a permit doesn’t allow photographing other park visitors without their permission.
When you book a session with me at Eagle Creek, I take care of the permit, so you don’t have to make a trip to the office.
Drones
Eagle Creek shares airspace with the Eagle Creek Airport, and the park says consumer drones flown by non-professionals aren’t allowed. Professional drone work needs its own application, an FAA-certified pilot and insurance, plus extra fees. If aerial shots matter to you, tell me early so we can plan it properly or choose another location.
When to go
- Golden hour: the hour or so before sunset gives warm, soft light and long shadows, and it’s my first choice for engagement photos. Since the park closes at dusk, we plan the session to finish before closing.
- Early morning: quieter trails, cooler summer temperatures and soft light. Great for families with little ones who are freshest in the morning.
- Season: fall is the most popular time for color. Spring brings fresh green. Summer works best early or late in the day to avoid harsh overhead sun.

What to wear in the park
Earth tones, creams, soft blues, rust and deep greens look beautiful against trees and water. For families, coordinate a palette of two or three colors rather than matching shirts. Flowing dresses catch the breeze nicely in open fields. Bring comfortable shoes for walking between spots and change into nicer shoes for the photos. Bug spray is a good idea in summer.
How a session flows
I usually start with relaxed walking shots on a trail so everyone warms up, move to an open field for fuller-length photos, and finish near the water as the light gets warm. For engagement sessions, we save the most romantic, close-up frames for that last stretch of golden light. For families, I keep the pace quick and playful so kids stay happy.
