LinkedIn headshots: studio vs. outdoor in Indianapolis

Your LinkedIn photo does more work than almost any other picture of you. It shows up next to every comment, every post, every message and every job application. The question I hear most from people booking headshots in Indianapolis is simple: should I do it in a studio or outside? Both can look great. The right one depends on your field, how you want to come across, and where else the photo will be used.

Start with how LinkedIn shows your photo

Before you choose a look, remember how small your photo really appears. LinkedIn crops profile photos into a circle, and most people see it at thumbnail size in a feed or a search result. LinkedIn's own guidance says profile photos should be at least 400 by 400 pixels, as a JPG or PNG up to 8 MB. That's easy to hit with any professional camera, but it tells you something important: your face has to read clearly when the photo is tiny.

That's why I frame LinkedIn headshots a little tighter than a website bio photo, from about the top of the shoulders to just above the head. Busy backgrounds, sunglasses and wide shots that look nice large tend to disappear at that size.

A clean studio backdrop keeps all the attention on your face and expression.

When a studio headshot is the better choice

A studio headshot gives you a clean background and full control over the light. Nothing in the frame competes with your face, and the result looks polished and consistent. I usually suggest studio for:

  • Corporate and finance roles, law, healthcare administration and other fields where a traditional, professional look is expected.
  • Job seekers who want a photo that works for any employer and any industry.
  • Teams who want every person on the company page to match, with the same background and lighting.
  • Anyone in a hurry. Weather doesn't matter in a studio, and we can switch outfits in minutes.

My studio is on the west side of Indianapolis at 5036 W Pike Plaza Rd, Indianapolis, IN 46254, which makes it an easy drive from downtown, the northwest side and the western suburbs.

When an outdoor headshot makes more sense

Outdoor headshots feel warmer and more personal. A soft, blurred background of trees, brick or city buildings adds color and a sense of place. I usually suggest outdoor or on-location for:

  • Realtors, coaches and consultants whose clients want to feel like they know you before they call.
  • Creatives and founders who want their photo to match a relaxed, approachable brand.
  • People who use the same photo everywhere, from LinkedIn to Instagram to a speaker page, and want something that doesn't feel stiff.

The trade-off is that outdoor sessions depend on the weather and the time of day. Open shade or the softer light later in the afternoon looks far better than harsh midday sun, which makes people squint and creates strong shadows under the eyes. If you're thinking about an outdoor look, my guide to the best photoshoot spots in Indianapolis covers some locations and the photo rules to check first.

A simple way to decide

If you're still stuck, ask yourself three questions:

  1. What do people in your field use? Look at the profiles of people a step or two ahead of you in your career. If they're mostly clean and formal, a studio photo fits in. If they're relaxed and colorful, outdoor may suit you better.
  2. Where else will it go? A company website with a uniform team page usually calls for studio. A personal brand site, a book cover or a podcast page can go either way.
  3. How do you want people to feel? Confident and capable leans studio. Warm and approachable leans outdoor. Many people want a bit of both, and we can do two looks in one session.

Getting the photo itself right

Whichever setting you pick, the things that make a LinkedIn photo work are the same:

  • Look like you do on a good day at work. If someone meets you for coffee, they should recognize you right away.
  • Wear solid, mid-tone colors. Navy, charcoal, deep green and soft blues work for most people. Small patterns can look busy at small sizes.
  • Go for a real expression. A slight, relaxed smile with some life in the eyes beats a stiff pose. I'll talk with you and coach you through it, so you don't have to know how to pose.
  • Keep it current. If your hair, glasses or look has changed a lot, it's time for a new photo.

Don't forget the banner

LinkedIn also has a background banner behind your profile photo, and LinkedIn recommends 1584 by 396 pixels for it. If you're doing a brand session, we can capture a wide shot of your workspace, your city or your product that works as a banner, so your whole profile looks put together.
